okay, I’ll admit it. I’ve been a little obsessed. More than a little, even. Ever since the helicopter sequence at the very beginning of inception, I’ve been meaning to find out more about this building. Today I took the time to do my internet investigation and this is what I found out.
It is called “Izumi Garden Tower” and you can find it HERE, in tokyo. It was apparently built by the largest architectural office in japan, NIKKEN SEKKEI. But I couldn’t find the reference at their website. It sits right on top of a metro station.
If you do an image search, you’ll find out I’m not the only one who thinks that these nine extruded squares packed together are extremely cool. I love the idea of a building that is its own skyline. But I couldn’t find any inception-related references to it.
Now, a request : does anyone happen to have a floorplan of the building ? I’d love to know exact proportions _ i’m guessing something like 30 m x 30 m as a base, but would love to know for sure. ALSO, what is the crazy hat building in the last photo ? anyone ?

BONUS : I also found out that the parisian café scene in inception was filmed very close to my place, HERE. and check out THIS VIDEO as well.

a beautiful and quite recent project by architect décio tozzi (and photographed by cristiano mascaro) of the tribunal regional do trabalho de sao paulo, a great courthouse. I don’t think we build like this in the US or in Europe anymore. It makes me think of the ford foundation building in New York by kevin roche.
this project became largely known in brazil not so much because of its architectural presence but because a large corruption scheme allowed for some people to steal a lot of money during its construction. which is too bad. and which is all too normal in brazil.
more pictures and an architectural perspective on it at archidaily.
